The Big Night 2.0

IMG_1944

Last night was the annual celebration of our favourite getaway in this city – Magazine Street Kitchen, or Magstreet, as we call it. Magstreet is a collaborative kitchen space, owned and conceptualised by the founders of The Table, my other favourite restaurant (and second home) in Bombay. At Magstreet, they operate anything from a bakery, to cooking classes, curated dinners and private parties.

Last year, on the exact same day, the opening night of Magstreet was a dinner based on the theme of a movie called The Big Night. The movie is about an Italian restaurant not doing so well, and as a last effort before shutting down the business, they organise The Big Night–an Italian family-style feast, which of course, turns out to be a great success. The menu was almost the same as last year’s, and is curated as per the menu straight from the film. Such an incredible idea, and honestly, one of the best meals I’ve ever had, both this and last year.

Upon arrival they started us off with different kinds of cheese, pickled vegetables, olives, home-baked breads, meat platters, and different kinds of delicious crostini…

…the team of chefs eagerly preparing the rest of the menu, while also mingling with the guests, sipping champagne and socialising. I’m obsessed with the open-kitchen concept!

IMG_1921

From champagne to wine… I would love to know how many bottles of wine were consumed during last night’s dinner. My guess is around 2 bottles/person? That’s around 40 bottles…

Nikoulina and Alex! Nikoulina is a boss of many talents for both The Table and Magstreet, and Alex is the main chef. He is also one of the city’s biggest food celebrities. Isn’t it so inspiring to be surrounded by people who are just so great at what they do?

My lovely friend Leeza. They say beauty stems from the inside…and I mean, look at her!

Then, it was time to sit down for the big feast. I ate so much I didn’t snap enough photos of the food. I’ll have to borrow photos from someone who captured it and share with you…

IMG_1928

Our dear friends Zahan and Reyna are almost always joining us for these type of dinner plans. It’s so nice to have friends who share your passion for food, wine and good company…

IMG_1931

…I think Saif and Zahan win in terms of food consumption of the evening, last night and every night. Gauri, who owns Magstreet, told us that Saif is known among the staff as the guy who can eat more than anyone! I guess its a good thing he also loves to workout, haha

IMG_1929

I’m so lucky to have this guy to share these pleasures of life with.

As one of the main courses, they served the famous pasta pie – Timpano. Alex describes it as one of the proudest moments of his career–to manage the Timpano to absolute perfection…

IMG_1933

…before cutting it up into individual slices, he proudly showed off his creation around the table to each of his guests. I sincerely love and appreciate the true passion & pride he has for his food…

IMG_1936

…here it goes…

IMG_1937

…absolute perfection, indeed…

IMG_1927

The wine was flowing freely as usual…

Before the dessert table was introduced, Alex had a speech about his gratitude and love for Magstreet, but also for the guests who come and appreciate & take part in what they do. Since Saif and I are such frequent guests of both their restaurants, I got up and gave a small thank you-speech as well–for their amazing work, the lovely, warm oasis they have created in a city that can otherwise get a bit repetitive or monotonous, their big hearts and kind, sweet souls. We are so grateful to be a part of it!

Last but not least, it was time for dessert. All kinds of deliciousness was spread out across a side table, with the chefs passionately filling up our plates…

Gelato with delicious, crispy cones. Classic tiramisu. Chocolate cake. Melon with mascarpone cream. Sweet breadsticks with a hazelnut cream. Pies. Cannoli’s with a sweet, creamy filling… Need I say more?

IMG_1941

Being the ice cream queen that I am, safe to say, the limoncello-chocolate gelato combination in a home-made cone was one of my favourite parts of the night. I had two!

Delicious gift bags for all guests!

After dessert, we were so full we could barely move. Or breathe, for that matter. Everyone’s silly sides were coming out in the kitchen downstairs, where we gathered for one last glass of wine before we all headed home for bed.

Safe to say, one of the most memorable nights I’ve had in my soon-to-be four years of living in Mumbai. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the Magstreet team! And congratulations!
